ATLANTA, GEORGIA, May 09–11 — Florida State’s Dajaz Defrand seemed ready for big things after her windy 10.88 at the LSU Invitational. Two weeks later, she proved she is the dominant sprinter in the ACC, winning a speedy sprint double. First came the 100, where her 11.08 topped Clemson’s Aleksandra Stoilova (11.35). Then in the 200, she ran a PR of 22.49 to win by nearly a half-second. Both came after she ran a storming backstretch that helped the Seminoles to 2nd (43.68) in the 4×1 behind Duke’s 43.59.

Duke scored an impressive repeat win, piling up 133 points to runner-up Clemson’s 118½. Besides the 4×1, wins came from Lauren Tolbert in the 400 (52.00), Skyla Wilson in the 400H (56.05) and the 4×4 (with a Tolbert 50.88 anchor). The Blue Devils’ only field win came in the pole vault from British frosh Gemma Tutton at 14-4 (4.37).

Virginia’s Margot Appleton outkicked Clemson frosh Gladys Chepngetich in the 1500, 4:11.04–4:13.15. The Kenyan came back to take the 2-lapper in 2:02.88, running perfectly even pace (61.44/61.44). Notre Dame’s Sophie Novak took the steeple in 9:48.00 and her teammate Olivia Markezich the 5000 in 15:23.14.

Clemson’s Oneka Wilson avenged last year, when she crashed in the final, to claim the 100H at 12.87, the Jamaican’s first trip under 13-flat.

On the field, Virginia Tech’s Victoria Gorlova had the best long jump at 20-9 (6.32), surviving a final round scare from Pitt’s heptathlon winner Ilse Steigenga, who went 20-7¾ (6.29). The next day, Gorlova reeled off a 43-6½ (13.27) in round 1, then had to worry about Shantae Foreman of Clemson, who opened up at 43-1 (13.13) then came within a centimeter of the lead with her round 5 PR of 43-6 (13.26).

Louisville’s Jayden Ulrich won the shot by nearly 3ft on Friday with her 58-10¾ (17.95). On Saturday, she took the discus with her meet record 201-1 (61.31). In all, she had three throws better than the runner-up, Leia Braunagel, who reached a PR 192-10 (58.79). Clemson’s Marie Forbes captured the hammer at 219-11 (67.03), a PR for the Jamaican.
