NCAA Women’s 800 — Jallow-Lockhart Leads Rewrite Of The ATL

To chop 0.88 from an Athing Mu record, as Sanu Jallow-Lockhart did, is no mean feat. Then consider the times behind her. (MIKE SCOTT)

THE ROLE OF odds-on favorite was shouldered by Arkansas senior Sanu Jallow-Lockhart, who moved to the U.S. from The Gambia at age 9. Her regional 1:57.74 that missed Athing Mu’s Collegiate Record by just 0.01 saw to that.

Penn State’s Australian junior Hayley Kitching led the first semi all the way en route to a 1:59.46 clocking. Stanford Olympian Juliette Whittaker remained just behind her throughout, crossing in 1:59.92.

Makayla Paige (North Carolina), the runner-up in 2025, and Arkansas’ Analisse Batista battled to the finish in semi 2, 1:59.91 to 1:59.93. They were passed in a frantic stretch drive by Kansas junior Emmaculate Jemutai, who came with a rush from well back with 120 left to grab the win with her own PR, 1:59.62.

Jallow-Lockhart took no chances in her race, leading from gun to finish in 1:58.89, the fastest semi ever, ahead of Duke’s Lauren Tolbert (1:59.69). Two Kenyans followed, Janet Jepkemboi Amimo (Kentucky) in 1:59.75 and 2026 Indoor winner Gladys Chepngetich (Clemson) in 1:59.81. Makayla Clark (Iowa State) achieved a PR 2:00.27 and the dubious honor of being the fastest non-qualifier.

Never before has a sub-2:00 semi time been a finals requisite.

The adjective “epic” is frequently overused, especially in current discourse, but it remains the best characterization of this 800 final, which produced an emphatic Collegiate Record and a wholesale revision of the all-time list.

Jallow-Lockhart went hard from the start and reached 200 in 26 seconds, ahead of Whittaker, Tolbert, Chepngetich, Batista and Paige. Little had changed by the bell, passed in a quick 55 seconds. Then, on the penultimate curve, Jallow-Lockhart began to methodically power away from the rest, and the gap widened.

Down the backstretch, Tolbert and Chepngetich passed a fading Whittaker, as did Paige. Kitchen was 8th, but soon began to move up on the outside.

Jallow-Lockhart passed the 600 in 1:25, and her lead was now almost 10 meters. Tolbert was second, Batista and Kitchen moving up. Paige and the suddenly awakened Jemutai were closing on them.

Jallow-Lockhart did not falter, gliding smoothly down the stretch to a 1:56.85 demolition of the previous standard. Kitchen, mirroring Colin Sahlman’s performance the day before, finished fastest, also bettering the record, while Tolbert, Paige, Batista and Jemutai all recorded PRs, moving the group to 2, 6, 7, 8 and 9 on the all-time list.

“Honestly, I can’t say I was shocked,” said the champion. “Since I ran at regionals and knew I was really close to the record, I knew that definitely I didn’t want to just break it, I wanted to shatter it. I wanted to make a statement, to make it stand, to be like, ‘Oh yeah, I want to watch you get this one now.’

“I was really proud of it. This is what I wanted, especially as my last collegiate meet. To do it on the big stage means everything to me.”
