Texas is projected to win by a point, with 16 of them (HJ 1st, LJ 3rd) coming from versatile Tyra Gittens. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)
ON THE FIRST WEEKEND of April, Texas eked out a narrow 2-point dual meet win against Texas A&M. Edrick Floréal’s Longhorns are now favored to win the NCAA team title, but their projected winning margin is even tighter, at a single digit, 69–68. But it’s not A&M that’s hard on their heels, it’s Mike Holloway’s Florida Gators, the indoor winners, who are closest. The Aggies are by no means out of it, however, coming in at 56 and loaded with high-end talent too.
Texas is predicted to have 13 scorers in 9 events (100, 200, 400, 800, 4×1, 4×4, HJ, LJ, TJ), Florida 10 scorers in 8 events (400, 800, 100H, 400H, 4×4, LJ, TJ, Hept). The two powerhouses are currently slated to go head-to-head with scorers in 5 events: 400, 800, 4×4, LJ, TJ. So in theory the meet will come down to the climactic long relay. Projected as the event’s winner, Texas has nowhere to go but down; as No. 7, Florida has chances of moving up.
