2021 NCAA Men’s Formchart #1 — Is LSU’s Lead Comfortable?

Favored in both the high jump and long jump, JuVaughn Harrison is a big key to LSU’s title hopes. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)

THE OLYMPIC TRIALS could play an outsized role in the NCAA men’s team battle, being staged as it is just a week later. Why? Because of the short turnaround’s effect on what might be considered “normal” doubles.

LSU’s 80-point total leads this chart comfortably over host Oregon’s 66. But we have taken the conservative route, making the assumption that projected Duck winners Cole Hocker (1500) and Cooper Teare (5000) will run only those events, having reasonable expectations of being forces to reckon with in the OT. In a normal year we’d expect Hocker to run the 800 as well, and Teare the 1500, combining to pick up enough points to make the battle with LSU very interesting.

The two powerhouses will almost be competing in different meets, with few event overlaps. Dennis Shaver’s Tigers are currently projected to score in the 200, 400, 110H, both relays, HJ, LJ, HT & JT, while Robert Johnson’s Ducks are tabbed for the 100, 800, 1500, 5000, 4×1, HJ, TJ & decathlon. Each is projected to win 4 events, with LSU getting a pair from HJ/LJ star JuVaughn Harrison.
