2016 TRACK & FIELD NEWS
MEN’S ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Wayde van Niekerk
When you run a full lap of the track in just 43.03 seconds, you’re pretty much guaranteed a very good shot at winning Athlete Of The Year honors. And that’s just what Wayde van Niekerk did, his World Record in Rio propelling him to No. 1.
The 24-year-old South African received 28 of 32 votes for No. 1, the others going to Eliud Kipchoge (2) and Mo Farah & Usain Bolt (1 each). In the long history of our AOY voting, van Niekerk becomes the first 400-only World Ranker to win.
The top 10 in the voting:
|1.||Wayde van Niekerk (South Africa)||400|
|2.||Mo Farah (Great Britain)||5000, 10,000|
|3.||Usain Bolt (Jamaica)||100, 200|
