You are invited to join the Track & Field News tour to the U.S. Outdoor Nationals in Sacramento next summer. The meet dates are Thursday, June 22, 2017 through Sunday, June 25.
This meet will determine the U.S. team for the World Championships in London in August, and as such it is much like a mini-Olympic Trials, with similar drama, thrills, surprises and disappointments. And again, the U.S. Junior Nationals will be held in conjunction with this meet, so it’s also a chance to see some of the younger up-and-comers you’ve only read about in T&FN.
Sacramento has a long history in the sport. Hornet Stadium was the site of the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Trials, and U.S. Nationals were held in Sacramento in 1968, 1981, 1995, and 2014.
Our lodging will be the Holiday Inn Express on 16th St. We will provide busing to/from the stadium. Bus parking on the Sacramento State campus will involve a 15-20 minute walk to the stadium entrance.
The Holiday Inn Express is close to downtown and easy walking distance to several good restaurants including P.F. Chang’s and Lucca (Italian). There is plenty of free parking at the hotel, and there’s a good complimentary breakfast as part of the deal.
You have a choice of length of stay—four or five nights. Sorry, no three-night stays, please.
TICKETS AND THE STADIUM
If you went to the Olympic Trials in Sacramento in either 2000 or 2004, you’ll be familiar with the venue—Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State University, with a recently resurfaced track (2014). In one way, it’s similar to Hayward Field at the University of Oregon—bench-type (backless) bleacher seating. But in another way it’s not—there is no roof. You’ll be exposed to the elements, and Sacramento can be quite warm in June. So, hats and sunscreen will be needed, and one of those portable fans might help, too.
It should be about a 15-20 minute bus ride from our hotel and we’ll schedule at least two trips TO the stadium daily, and one back after last major event.
We are ordering “Finish Premium” tickets, so we’ll be close to the finish line about 15-20 rows up.
THE TOUR PRICE
$750 per person. The cancellation fee is only $15 at this point, but this will go up to $150 by December 31. Final tour payment about April 1.
