11-19-2019 01:06 AMWe drove there in 2007, just to see Sherwood Forest (almost all gone), stopped in a local gas (sorry . . . petrol) station, asked the attendant about it and
He said, 'Go back towards Notnim.'
I said, 'Nottingham?"
He looked at me funny, nodded and said, 'Notnim.'
That is my entire experience with the name in the UK. That may have been just his way of saying it, but that is indeed what he said.
Not unlike going to Edinburgh and having all the natives calling it,
Ed'n'bura
Where'd the 'g' go?!

11-19-2019 01:13 AMOn a related note, I was amused to discover that native Missourans refer to the state as
Mizura
amonst themesleves, but
Mizuree
when talking to non-Missourans.
It happened too many times when we there to be anything but a vast conspiracy perpetrated by the natives to be able to distinguish the home-grown from the tourists!!Last edited by Atticus; 11-19-2019 at 03:36 AM.

11-19-2019 04:11 AMIf an American said Notnim, especially outside Nottinghamshire, no one would have the slightest idea what you are saying...I've never had any problem with nodding-m
Some of the Nottinghamshire folk I met gave me the impression that the city of Nottingham was some sort of alien place best not talked about...I remember being at a faculty dinner and someone asked a secretary if she was from around Nottingham and she said no...then she mentioned a small town about 6 miles away!

11-19-2019 07:18 AMLocal pronunciation is often different to that used elsewhere in news reports, sports scores etc. In these it will always be NOT-ing-um.
Syllables have a tendency to disappear with local pronunciations in the UK. The county of Norfolk is notorious for this - Hunstanton becomes Hun-ston, Wymondham becomes Wind-um and Fakenham* becomes Fake-num.
'BBC' pronunciation is Fake-en-um.
