I understand why he says that and I certainly respect him as a director, because this is exactly the kind high brow intellectualism that is the hallmark of someone who lacks perspective. He said,

Cinema is an art form that brings you the unexpected. In superhero movies, nothing is at risk, a director says.

He's making a semantic argument that holds no water with the VAST majority of movie-goers.
Is there more nuance to appreciate in one of his films? Absolutely.
Is there greater entertainment value to his movies? Only if intense character studies are the only thing that movies are supposed to communicate, which fails the smell test.
If Joker outgrosses his top 3 movies (which it might), is he really willing to denigrate its value to audiences? I use Joker as an example because it's R-rated (so adult-oriented) and I didn't even like it, because it wasn't true to either the material or our understanding of mental illness, which it purported to portray. But word-of-mouth is propelling it past the $ONE BILLION mark.
I'm sure jeremyp will dismiss this post, which is fine, but just because someone THINKS it isn't cinema (which, yes, is synonymous with 'movies' to most people) doesn't make it so, even if you are Martin S.

Another quote in the article is much more 'sensible'.

He should have just left it at that.

[rant] OF COURSE IT'S NOT! Jeeez, how many times do I have to say that? It IS, however, an extremely good indicator of how much people enjoy it.

It someone has such a refined palate that only certain kinds of 'cinema' sate their needs, more power to them. But do NOT judge those of us hoi-polloi who are easily amused and/or entertained by action films that have no greater purpose than to make people happy.

Why do some Oscar-nominated films do so poorly at the Box Office? Because few people want to see them. If some people want to say they liked it, yay for them.

If someone likes Kinkade or Michael Bublé or a velour depiction of Dogs Playing Poker, YAY for them.

I'm really, really tired of people telling me what I should or should not like!
I even tell my students not to trust me or believe a word I say if they don't want to. When a test comes along, just put the answer that will get you a good grade - you certainly are under no obligation to believe it to be true just because I do. [/rant]

I don't like him simply because I grew up in New England and his paintings seem kitschy to me, but I know people who proudly display them over their mantels, and I always say something nice about them.

I can agree with a lot of what Martin Scorsese said. However, I disagree with him when he says certain movies are not cinema. I can't stand those Marvel movies either (loved the comic books however) but I will not say they are not cinema.
