Both Avdeyenko and Bubka were surprise World Champs in 1983 but less surprising Olympic Champs in 1988. Also both Ukrainians.

In 1983, I was sitting with a good friend (who shall be nameless) at the World Championships in Helsinki. I can tell you that this friend was well-known world-wide in the sport of track and field. When Bubka won the pole vault at the age of 19, this friend said to me, "Well, you'll never hear his name anymore." He meant Bubka was a "flash-in-the-pan" and was lucky to win in Finland. Be careful what you say.
