11-02-2019 09:43 PMMillard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Chester A. Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry S Truman, and Lyndon B. Johnson all took over the presidency on the death of the previous president before the 25th Amendment to our Constitution (meaning they had no VP).

11-02-2019 10:10 PMabove is true, but the last 4 subsequently got ELECTED as Prez, and had VP's then. Not so the first 3. And Ford got to name one, just like he himself had been named !

11-02-2019 10:39 PMYes, once elected as president, they also have a VP, but not when they took over on the death of the previous president.

11-04-2019 03:06 AMDole was the losing VP candidate in 1976 and presidential nominee in 1996 but lost.
Mondale was the losing VP candidate in 1980 and presidential nominee in 1984 but lost.
JFK was one of three finalists to become the losing VP candidate in 1956 but did not get nominated, and, of course, was elected President in 1960. Hubert Humphrey was also a finalist in 1956 and became a presidential nominee in 1968 but lost.
William Miller was the losing VP candidate in 1964 and made a credit card commercial when no one remembered who he was. :-)Last edited by Halfmiler2; 11-04-2019 at 03:15 AM.

11-05-2019 01:30 AMHumphery's running mate became the front runner for the Democratic nomination in 1972, until he cried... and then denied that he had cried and insisted that it was melted snowflakes on this face.

11-07-2019 10:43 PMRule of thumb: If you're the losing V.P. nominee or the losing incumbent V.P., don't run for president 4 years later. Wait at least 8 years.

11-12-2019 04:05 PMI think you are wrong. I recall him running and losing to George W Bush in 2000.
