    USA had four runners named just for the 4x4 relay (the 4th-through-7th-placers from the OTs) and the plan was to use those four, that's why neither Eastman nor James Gordon (the other individual 400 man) was on the relay team. The only reason Carr did get to run the relay was that Arnold Adams, the OT sixth-placer, injured himself before the Olympics and they needed a replacement.
