10-21-2019 01:55 PMSimply showing respect, and NOT showing disdain and contempt for your country/flag is a great start to an athletic career. I tip my Massachusetts hat and salute the Mississippi boy.

10-21-2019 04:04 PMAt the Naval Academy we were taught to stand at attention and face the flag during the playing of the National Anthem. If in uniform, salute. If not, hand over heart. But the important thing is more than the outward stuff, it's the honoring, and that's what comes through Sam's actions.
Makes me remember Dave Wottle's actions on the podium at Munich. He forgot to doff his ball cap, but everything else about his actions showed a respect for the anthem and flag, which is why his actions weren't viewed by many as offensive.
I think it is also honoring to give respect to the playing of any National Anthem during WC or OG. It might not mean all that much to me, but it sure does to the one on the top stand of the podium.

10-21-2019 04:07 PMIn uniform, we must be at attention.
In civvies, just face the flag, remove the hat, and be quiet/respectful.
And don't scold those who don't do the above. It is their constitutional right, which I respect (tho don't agree with).
Taking a knee can show respect too (IMO), but that's a different thread.
