Happy birthday today (Thursday) to two Olympic champions with a total of three Olympic gold medals, all with world records.
One of our birthday athletes turns 78 today while the other person was born 110 years ago today.
These two champions were born approximately 258 miles (415 km) from each other and both competed in just one Olympics.
The older of the two was 32 years old when the younger athlete was born and this older person won Olympic gold less than fifty miles from the school the younger champion attended.
Both athletes won Olympic gold medals in the same event and this event didn't involve hurdles.
About fifteen months after the younger athlete won Olympic gold, this older person died at the age of 56.
You might already know that the older athlete died in the same city where the younger athlete won that Olympic gold medal.
Sharp eyes will focus on the second word in our four-word title.
Now, please name both Olympic champions for this penultimate Wednesday of October.

10-23-2019 03:44 PMHappy birthday (78) today to Ulis Williams and yes, Bill Carr was born 110 years ago today. Nice job, dukehjsteve. Both Carr and Williams won Olympic gold medals in the four by 400 relay. Carr in 1932 and Williams in 1964. Carr, of course, also won the 400 in Los Angeles. Carr was born in Arkansas while Williams was born in Mississippi.

10-23-2019 04:01 PMDoes anyone know the schedule of the 400m semifinal and final at the 1932 OG. How much rest time did Carr and Eastman get after those blistering semifinals?

10-24-2019 02:57 AMIt was pretty amazing (and on a dirt track). Interesting to note that Carr's world record was 46.2 in Los Angeles (1932) and Ulis Williams ran 46.0 ( on a wet dirt track) in 1964 (Tokyo) when he placed fifth in the 400 final.

10-24-2019 03:13 PMI'm sorry to say that I "jumped the gun" yesterday when I posted birthday wishes for Bill Carr and Ulis Williams. I knew their birthdays were October 24, but I didn't realize yesterday was October 23. Happy birthday today (Thursday) to Ulis Williams (78). Bill Carr was born 110 years ago today.

10-24-2019 03:46 PMCarr's OG final, considering the semi 2 hour earlier (where he broke the OR) is one of those rare performances where you start to question everything, timing, distance. It is a performance that was literally 30-40 years ahead of its time.
Have to give Ben Eastman credit too, I dont think Carr would have achieved what he did that day but for the once a generation talent and competition of Eastman. Two 400m greats drove each other to the edge!
Still cant figure out why Eastman wasnt on the 4x400 WR setting relay in LA. They certainly would have brokeon 3:08 and maybe even 3:07 had he.
Sad that just a few months later Carr is damaged goods after a car accident. What could have been will never be known.

Carr died of a heart attack in Japan, 1966, 20+ years after serving the US Navy during WW2 in the Pacific theater. A truly great American.Last edited by user4; 10-24-2019 at 05:27 PM.
