I'm not suggesting they do daily updates during the "regular season" (for all the reasons you indicate), just during a champs.

During the champs, there are no other meets of significance (outside the marathon).

An update: there has been NO update of the rankings yet. Cos who wants any momentum or ongoing buzz?

That is exactly what is required during the season. An athlete needs to know right away what the impact of a result is on his rankings, especially if the qualification deadline is coming up.

Why? Exactly what information does it provide? Kevin Mayer had no ranking, so logically he wasn't the favourite? At least that is what the rankings would suggest. There are lots of examples where the rankings provide a completely inaccurate picture.

And SMU had no ranking in the 400 coming in; by the Final, if they updated the rankings, she might have had one.

Why these world rankings, which are not proven (yet) to really reflect athletes' true abilities in any way whatsoever, are being trialled as a method of selection for the Olympics, rather than the next Worlds, I will never know.

Time to sack them off for Tokyo and try them out for Eugene instead (and then realise they are bullshit and axe them for Budapest...)

It still makes no sense to implement changes within an Olympic cycle. Try it out for Eugene, not Tokyo.

on the other hand, could the combination of Q-standards and rankings next year turn out to be any worse than this year's mess with Q-standards plus list-filling?

It could get a lot worse. With 1000s of results missing from the IAAF rankings, there could be dozens of athletes missing qualification simply because the IAAF can't keep track. And if those stories leak, it definitely would be worse. The invitation process will be not much different, but they'll have a 1000 invites this time since the plan is to fill half the fields via rankings.
And then there is the simple fact that the IAAF still has not come up with a webpage that actually tracks qualification.
