Who do you think will be the most surprising gold medal winners? And on the downside, which of the gold medal favorites will have the most disappointing results?

I think Tajay Gayle (long jump) will be the biggest upset winner on the men's side at the end of the meet. Not only in the fact that he surprisingly won, but also in the margin over the rest of the field (30 cm/ 1 foot) and over his previous PB. Even his second-best jump would have been good enough to win, and was also a PB.

Yup, I suspect there will be even more surprising winners than Gayle, but we don't know yet who they are

Gayle is an even bigger upset because he almost dominated the competition, winning by a foot (not sure if it was his take-off one...). And with Henderson second, it is a combined bigger upset. At this point, it is about the only upset so far (other than people not making it further).

Gayle's previous best was 8.32 from London this year. That performance put him behind 43 jumps (all conditions) of James Beckford, 2 by Damar Forbes and one by Alain Bailey.

After the WC, he now sits atop all of those, replacing Beckford's 1997 NR of 8.62 and Beckfords windy best jump of 8.68 +4.9

In fact, Gayle has only had 21 competitions over 8m before this competition.

On the women's side, I'm predicting Maggie Ewen as a surprise winner in the shot put. For disappointments, Elaine Thompson will finish outside the top 5 in the 100m.

Anderson Peters in the javelin will be another surprise men's winner, but unlike Gayle he'll barely scrape out a win by a small margin. In the decathlon, Mayer messes up one of his events and misses the podium.
