They 44.5 opening leg for the US was the difference (did the last runner just slow or was he gassed completely. Very uneven seeding, as it turned out.

Please tell me why we need another event for the 400 meter runner?

We need events that are attractive to fans, and particularly casual fans. Relays are very attractive to most people. For a number of reasons, 400m is a good relay component.

As one of the announcers said, it gives countries such as Bahrain which can’t field full men’s or women’s teams a chance to run.

all other considerations aside, this is the bottom line for me (I'm still unclear how it was deemed acceptable to give—in most scenarios—the U.S. another "guaranteed" gold).

Which is why I like the 4x2x4, which caters to 800 runners and is far more likely to spread the wealth around

I didn't say we needed it; in fact I'm pretty sure I have stated on these forums that it's redundant. I just don't know why people would consider it a boring race while they consider other relays fascinating.

I (personally) consider it "boring" because i believe it needs to have a fixed format for matched-sex legs.

Also "boring" in that it so grossly favors big-population nations like the US who don't have to be so selective about choosing personnel (and in the process potentially damaging their 4x4 single-sex teams and/or individual 400 people).

I totally agree, but that was actually the case today, except for one team. And most people on this thread said they found it boring for precisely the opposite reason - because every team was running in the same sex order.

Matched sex legs just makes it look like a regular 4x4 with B-tier athletes. Mixed sex legs makes it look like an embarrassment for women in the sport.

Apart from possibly (but not necessarily) the US and Jamaica, I don't expect the lineups to be B-tier in the final.
