I already had time to write that for the first time ever there would be no Finns in the WC final; but somehow, miraculously, Etelätalo squeaked in by 14 cm. Apocalypse averted for another two years.

    Group B had 13 throwers over 80, compared to just 7 in group A. But in the top 12, it's 7 from A, 5 from B.

Also a national record for the once-proud Hungarians.

The main responsibility in defending the reputation of Uralic peoples lies on Kirt's shoulders, however.

Who would you rate as the greatest ever Finn in this event - Matti Jarvinen?

    Järvinen #1. Myyrä #2.

It's not an obvious call because Myyrä has two Oly golds to Järvinen's one, both lost one opportunity at further Oly gold/medals to wars (Järvinen could plausibly have been a contender in '44 but probably it would have been enough for him if he actually medalled in '40), both had very good longevity and while Järvinen had 10 official WRs to Myyrä's 1, that stat lies an awful lot because of weirdness in what did and didn't get the official IAAF stamp. (If you just look at throws that were the longest ever in the world up to that point, it's Järvinen 8-Myyrä 5.)

Järvinen gets #1 mostly for greater peak dominance ('34) and for competing in a more developed era, I sometimes look at today's Finnish throwers and feel depressed that they can't even throw as far as he did.

Peters 86.69 the only big throw in round 1. Favorites struggling on their first throws.

Kirt 86.21, Vetter 85.37 in round 2. Not a great competition so far, with 4th place below 82.

Yego NM. In shape, but threw out of sector twice and had one narrow foul.
