Sebastian Chmara did it in the 60m en route to world indoor title in the heptathlon in 1999.

Imagine what Kaul can do if he actually manages to get his 100m time down to 10.80. He said that was his main focus for next year and with a 10.80 he should be able to improve his LJ and hurdles too. Add regular HJ results (a leg injury kept him from HJ training for most of the year) and he could be getting close to 9000.

And he is already as a 21yearold under 49 at 400 off 11.2 speed. He could potentially be low 47 high 46 at 10.8.

That's a big if, though. He just doesn't seem to have great natural speed. But then again, Nafi Thiam has done pretty well without being tremendously fast, and the decathlon is actually relatively less about speed than the heptathlon.

Kevin Mayer did it. He was a mediocre sprinter, never ran sub11 until 2016, age 24.

Everyone here probably already saw this Spikes article by Kaul, published just as the WC began. I just read it now, in keeping with my usual 'after the fact' approach to life. It's interesting reading, to see a bit of what he was thinking as the competition approached. Among other things, he expressed confidence in his ability to finish strong in the last events, and said he hoped to get close to 8600.
