There's only like 16 men left in the competition now with no zero scores in any event.

    Kaul is still only 9th!

But he's a monster in the JT and 1500, I think his score for the final 2 events at the Euro U23s was the best by anyone ever.

How does an accomplished athlete foul 3x in the discus? Just stand there, throw and get a mark, at least.

Shkurenyov is a great big meet decathlete, though. It feels like every year I forget he even exists, and then when the time comes to sort out the medals, there he is in full contention.

You're right. I didn't even have Shkurenyov in my top 10. The pole vault is a key event for Kaul. If he can get close to 5.00 meters, then he is in the hunt for the Gold!

Projections going into the PV, after Mayer retires:
    Warner 8673 (4.85 63 4:26)
    Shkurenyov 8595 (5.30 59 4:30)
    Uibo 8575 (5.25 63.5 4:28)
    Kaul 8506 (4.75 73 4:18)
Lepage 8355 (510 55.5 4:50) (he doesn't project 5th, but added him since he's up there on present score)

This is wide open. Any of those top four could win.

These are projections not predictions, and thus include PV heights that aren't in the progression.

Shkurenyov seems to be in a bit of pain too; but he cleared 510 and is still jumping.
