I see the Jam coach is kvetching about the lack of relay practice, and certainly the USA has not covered itself in glory in its botched global relays. Are the German women and Japanese men going to school the two preeminent sprint nations?

If we do not practice enough, we SHOULD lose! We are no longer in the era when we can just depend on a Bob Hayes to save us.

...or the British teams (of both sexes), or Chinese men.

any number of American sprinters (think Henry Carr for a start) could have made up the 5ft that Hayes did on Marian Dudziak and Jocelyn Delecour

USA won the relay by 0.30; no Americans (and only two runners from any country) were within 0.30 of Hayes in the individual 100, despite Hayes being in lane 1.

Henry Carr probably could have got it done, but I doubt there were many others.
