Jarred Rome has died at the age of 42 (see story on front page). Rome represented the U.S. in two Olympics (discus). It kind of sounds as if he had a stroke, but there is no definite cause of death as of now. To die at 42 is way too young.

So very sad to hear this today. He hosted us at the Iron Wood Throws Classic every year, such a great event for throwers from HS to elite. He did so much year-round for Iron Wood and the sport in general. If you heard him speak at our event, or in the many other ways he contributed, you saw how much he gave beyond his own throwing accomplishments.

Last June at Iron Wood Classic: Jarred stood before our very large gathering of throwers for more than 20 minutes, shouting out the great performances, sharing motivational anecdotes and commanding our attention while uplifting our community like only he can. A must see for all who loved him and love the throws:

At the '04 OT I was doing on-field interviews for the crowd, and rather than the quick 2-sentence platitudes that so many athletes had (mmm, maybe it was the questioner?), Jarred asked for the mike and gave a delightful little heartwarming speech. Was quite moving.
