Happy birthday today (Saturday) to an Olympic champion who was born on a Sunday 117 years ago, won the Olympic gold medal on a Sunday 33 years later, and died on a Sunday at the age of 83.

Our birthday athlete did not compete in the Olympic hurdles, but did compete in two events at one Olympic Games.

The two athletes behind our birthday champion when winning that gold medal came from the same country as did our birthday athlete.

This was very unusual for this Olympic event.

Time to name our birthday athlete for this third Saturday of September.

I suspect, it is one of many Finnish distance runners of that era.

Very nice, LopenUupunut. It is Ilmari Salminen. Salminen, of course, won the 1936 Berlin Olympic 10,000 (Finland sweep of medals). Five days later, he placed sixth in the 5,000. I say "Late Start" because Salminen was about 27 when he took up competitive running and about six years later he was the Olympic champion.
