    ...we know. But this bad?

"In our study, high soft drinks consumers had a higher body mass index (BMI) and were also more likely to be current tobacco users."
Studies that include weight and smoking concern me because they are the worst factors. Of course individuals eating to excess and smoking have problems (not fat, don't smoke).

I like a brand name black cherry ginger ale. The money quote :
one or more glasses a day were associated with deaths from digestive diseases, including diseases of the liver, appendix, pancreas and intestines.

One thing that people often neglect is that in order to make a drink as subjectively sweet as sweetened solid food, e.g. a cake, you have to put a lot more sugar in the liquid to achieve the same result.

The key point to keep in mind is that, based on the first quote above, there are certainly other causal factors. Smokers lifestyles are going to be vastly different from a non-smokers.

I have eschewed sugary drinks for Diet Coke and Diet Mountain Dew. As a hillbilly now residing in Alabama, this is a standard approach.

My thought exactly. It's not that drinking soda leads to smoking addiction, or vice versa. It's just that both are done by people not concerned with healthy lifestyle. As the old adage goes, correlation doesn't mean causation.
