I lived in Tucson 1996-2004. We knew she lived there at that time but never saw her. I did have a friend who owned a restaurant to which she went quite often. As did Paul and Linda McCartney. She was so right about the border. You could walk/drive across shop and eat and go back no I.D. required. Once we bought a large Mexican mirror, too large to lug around so they said: "When you're done shopping come back and we'll have it carried across." A young teenager (15?) carried it for us, right through customs, to our car. We tipped him and off he wandered back to the store. Then came 9/11 and getting back across became a much more difficult process so we stopped going. Tucson is still our favorite city, and after another Hurricane scare like Dorian we are talking about going back.

I may have told this before.
Circa 1949-50, Border Olympics at Laredo was always our first outdoor meet of season. A sojourn into Nuevo Laredo was a rite of passage. Crossing in both directions was normally painless. No documentation required but US might ask where you were born, which for most of us was OK or TX. We had two milers from Norway and Sweden who made mistake of answering truthfully. They were detained. Their passports were in Stillwater, OK, 700 miles north. They were scheduled to run in about three hours.
As I recall, the track was about 2 miles from the border. A couple of us ran to the track to find Coach Higgins. He came to border and somehow got them released. They made their races but I do not remember how they fared.

Agreed - but too much focus on the back-up singers.

The voice of 10 thousand angels and the face of one too! Linda was one in a billion. I had no idea that she was close to one of the victims of the Manson family. What a strange and small world.
