Actually, as a general rule the coach is always responsible and will be held responsible for player conduct at game time on national television . Would not surprise me at all if that stunt (and yes, it really was funny) played some part in his firing.

While I found it hilarious, it is a window into the culture of the Ole Miss football team and when it happens when all the chips are down during a huge rivalry in the later stages of a losing season the trustees are going to be asking questions about what direction are we going in and why ?

Paul Finebaum thinks that Luke's defense of the player after the game is what did him in.

Meanwhile some of the players are really unhappy with Luke's firing, with some of them making delusional comments.

    Delusional indeed...

"Defensive tackle Patrick Lucas Jr., a freshman, said he doesn't think fans should have the power to determine who leads the players. If anything, Lucas said, the players should have some say in who they have to follow atop the program."

Pretty odd, no mention of the incident in that story.

How about these words of wisdom:

"You're basing stuff off the fans. But we don't care about the fans that much. I'm going to be honest. We're here for the coach. We love football. If you don't want to support us, that's just your fault."
    and these:

"I think they made the move off wins and losses," Hibbler said. "They didn't make the move off how the players feel. We're the ones praising him every day."

If these players really cared about the coach they would be sensitive to the scrutiny the athletic director, the president and the board of directors subject him to.
