I don't know about her situation but the porn industry is regularly used in the financial press as an exemplar of the disruption caused by the internet, so I can provide an explanation.

So the production of porn by studios is based on per scene fees, which average around $1k per scene - obviously higher/lower depending on fame. This is well down from $10k for elite performers around late 90s/early2000s, primarily due to the internet killing studio revenue.

So, if Mia Khalifa only did a dozen or so scenes, it's quite possible that's all she made directly, because she has zero rights in the scenes she filmed, so no further income beyond the initial payment.

However earning performing fees is not where the money is nowadays. Smart performers use studio work to build a level of porn fame and then move to exploit direct relationships with fans.

This is done through a range of activities especially integrated web platforms that allow regular fan subscriptions and extra payments for personalised videos etc. This allows performers to extract much more money per fan than traditional methods.

However, this is not the ultimate. Leveraging the level of porn fame to make money elsewhere is now where the really big money is.

Do people know Mia Khalifa because of her actual porn work, or do people now know her because she leveraged that small amount of fame into connections to get into something else?

She can probably now make more money for being famous for only making $12k in porn than she could ever make from porn itself. See Kardashians for a successful example of fame from leveraging a porno.

This is very informative. Your last point is especially interesting. Here is an interesting analysis of her notriety.

Thanks for that link, it is very informative, especially the recognition of luck and timing in making the most of a common process. This is not much different from the legitimate movie industry where most movies lose money but when the magic happens, the cash floods in.

Of course, the Khalifa type experiences just a modern expression of a very old pathway of using female desirability to access wealth and fame.

It was preceeded by the Playboy model from mid-last century century, the Hollywood model from early last century, etc, etc....
