I found that California hitch-hiking suffered in late 1969 after the Manson murders.
People became averse to giving rides to young strangers, and rightfully so.
In December of 1969, my pal and I set off to hitch to Altamont (billed as Woodstock West) but found no takers.
So we gave up and drove his car, an old Buick convertible with a tweaked left rear axle that caused the lug nuts holding the wheel on to gradually loosen.
To survive we had to stop about once an hour to tighten them.
At one of the stops we picked up 3 hitch-hikers headed for Altamont who turned out to be among the dumbest, least hygienic people in American.
The Altamont concert was an absolute disaster in every possible way... I have avoided hitch-hiking, hitch-hikers and huge crowds ever since!

It is indeed. I made the stop several years ago. There was still a vintage flat bed Ford parked at the curb... two tour buses pulled up while I was buying some Eagle cassette tapes at the corner store...

Centering ones life around a music festival filled with teens and 20something drifters as they celebrate recreational mind altering drug use and the juvenile ramblings of popular music.. what could possibly go wrong ?
