I hitch-hiked all the time back in the '50s and '60s all over the Northeast. Everyone did it then.

My all-boys boarding school ENCOURAGED hitch-hiking to get around!! There was even a little sheltered bench designated for it on the highway outside of the school.

70s too....my parents use to drop me off at a nearby interstate entrance to hitch back to university....I hitched all over the West....

And in 1976 hitching through Winslow, Arizona I got off there to stand on a corner and then immediately left ...

I had an older college buddy that picked up hitch hickers from time to time, he was the most pure hearted soul you could know (also a fairly talented track guy). He was a man of very modest means but he was so generous and kind.

One day he picked up the wrong two guys on the highway and was stabbed multiple times and left for dead on the side of the road in a new england winter as they drove off with his modest car. It is a miracle of rare events that he ever survived. He went on to live another 30 years and never said a bad word about the killers (ill call them killers because the wounds he received were deadly serious and made to kill). I always wondered if those deep organ stabs did not compromise his body and shorten his life. At any rate, i have picked up many a hitch hicker but there are times and places where you have to be wise, friends, be careful out there.

    Meanwhile...

David Bowie had an answer for Woodstock in 1969 that I was unaware of...

my father liked to tell the story of being in the Canadian Army during WWII. He was at a base near Toronto and he and buddy got weekeend passes and decided they'd hitchhike to see Ottawa, a couple of hundred miles away.

This, however, was during a period of intense gas rationing, so while they had no trouble getting picked up, getting very far was the problem. After their first 10 rides, and they had only managed to travel 14M (!) they gave up and turned around.
