Far away from the spotlight, there was high drama in the European Team Championships Second Division, held this past weekend in Varazdin, Croatia:

Twelve teams competed, with only the winner advancing to the first division in 2021. Estonia won quite handily.

But due to a re-organization of the the event no less than the bottom five teams were to be relegated to the Third division. It was clear from the outset that Luxembourg, Malta and Georgia had no hope. But the battle for places 6 through 9 was fierce, with only two countries avoiding relegation from amongst Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Israel.

On day one, Cyprus did well and seemed safe, only to falter badly on day two. Then Bulgaria got the necessary breathing room with victories by Mavrodieva in the womens' SP and Ivet Lalova in the 200. Salpeter's victory in the women's 5000 gave Israel some hope. Going into the last event Cyprus was doomed, while Israel trailed Austria by 2 1/2 points, therefore had to finish three spots ahead of the Austrians in the men's 4x4 to avoid relegation.

However Austria won it's heat while Israel placed only third. Amid the Austrian jubilation came bad news: the team was disqualified for an illegal baton exchange, giving them zero points! But while the Israelis were celebrating came another announcement: Israel was DQ'ed as well, restoring the Austrian lead!

There was also drama in the final event in the 3rd league, when Serbia missed out on promotion to Iceland after being DQed in the m4x4.

Why the DQ for Israel? Also a bad exchange?

And in the Super League the third German got injured during the race, I think, but he still jogged home, enabling his team to finish, Had he just given up, Germany would have finished 4th instead of second!

I did not know about Serbia's misfortune. But now I recall that in 2017 they were relegated from the Second Division, also because they were DQ'ed in the men's 4x4, the final event.

Serbia also did not send anyone in the manís hammer. All they had to do was for someone to throw the hammer like one foot and they could get 5 extra points... because 4 more teams did not participate in that event. They lost to Iceland to 3 points overall.

This is why Serbia got DQed. Not sure what to say. Boshko Kiyanovich even won this, he could have ended in lane 4 and still win, but he ran too close to the runner from Moldova who didn't appear to change his direction significantly.
