Happy birthday today (Wednesday) to two Olympic champions born a total of 156 years ago.

These two athletes competed in a total of four Olympic Games and won a total of three Olympic gold medals.

The older person was 18 years old when the younger athlete was born, however the older athlete died at the age of 41.

You might be interested to know that approximately 7,309 miles (11,764 km) separate the birth sites of these two champions.

One of our birthday athletes competed in two events at one Olympic Games while the other person competed in one event at three Olympic Games.

Both athletes won Olympic gold medals in Europe while one of our birthday athletes turns 69 today.

Neither of our birthday people were born in Asia, South America, or Australia.

Can you name one or both of these Olympic champions with birthdays on this first Wednesday of August?

    Give it a try.

My first reaction to this was that DW and AB are the initials of the two athletes, since you usually put the don't worry about barriers message in the text.

My next thought was that from the geography clues, I'd guess that one of these athletes was a North American and the other either a European or an African.

The 69-year old might be Dave Wottle.

Happy birthday today to Dave Wottle (69) who won the 1972 Olympic 800. He also ran the Olympic 1,500, but did not make the final. Very good, Olli. The other champion with an August 7th birthday is Abebe Bikila. Bikila died in 1973 and would have been 87 today. Most everyone knows Bikila won two Olympic marathons (Rome in 1960 and Tokyo in 1964). He ran the Mexico City Olympic marathon, but did not finish the race.
