Which is just 2 weeks before the WC start. For a team that will depend heavily on the distance races, that seems to be less than optimal! The 10000 team, however, will still be selected at the NCs, Aug 16-17.

I don't understand this. Qualification periods is until 6th of September, the IAAF claims to begin the invitation process on 7th of September. That means all selections have to be entered by September 6th midnight. Otherwise IAAF wouldn't know how many athletes are entered per event and therefore wouldn't know how many to invite. So how can the Kenyans hold their trials AFTER that deadline?

It may not be as bad as all that. In events where KEN has at least 3 qualifiers, they'll just pick the 3 who finish highest in their trials. It doesn't matter who they are. For events where they have 2 qualifiers or less, the IAAF can assume that they'll enter all of their qualifiers. If there are injuries, drop-outs, etc., in those events, there is still time before the invite period ends for the IAAF to fill their fields.

do we know what the "invite period" is? In a properly run railroad it would be over and done with before the Kenyan Trials.

For the previous championships where we did the "Road to" lists, it had always been this way: The first deadline is the the latest when federations have to enter their teams, which always included names of athletes. Then the invitation period started which continued until the final entries deadline. You can't simply enter "three athletes to be named later" because some federations don't even know the rules. I don't remember which championship it was, but the Kenyan federation tried to enter a triple jumper with no qualifying mark and was surprised that his entry was declined. I get the feeling once again the Kenyan federation doesn't understand the entry process.

@gh: According to the qualification system and entry standards pdf it's from 7-15 Sep.

Oh well, maybe if they enter their team after the deadline and are denied entry by the IAAF, the Kenyan federation officials will learn to read the rules.

Final entries date listed on iaaf.org is September 16th. If so, it appears Kenya has collectively read the rules.

How can the IAAF start inviting athletes from 7th of September onwards if they won't have the entries by countries until Sep 16th ?
