    The Chicago Tribune just ran article on the riots in Chicago....I knew about the incident on the beach that started it and the aftermath.... didn't realize how bad....also the segregation that was the result...

    Meanwhile ...3 years later in Southern Illinois there was the Herrin Massacre....a violent period in American history....

    Not the "Red Summer" but related, especially on the segregation front. There was a lot more to segregation in U.S. cities than a reaction to riots. Much of it was driven by class and real estate trends.

    My historian wife was one of the members of the group that commemorated the 100th anniversary of the riot. Until then it had widely been ignored. It has since been added to the social studies curriculum in the state. And her first book debunks the theory that the riot was a primary cause of Atlanta's segregation post 1920.
