It's not Austin so it's likely one that struggles. I could see her 3rd but I could also see NH. And she is 37 so there's that.

Just wanted to bring some attention to Vega in 5th with a 4.60m PR. She immigrated from Cuba and hadn't vaulted since '13, got the itch and started vaulting again. This was her first full season training again. PR was 4.51 from '12.

She jumped 4.55 at the Liberty Bridge meet recently (in the open section).

She defected from Cuba while in Des Moines for the 2013 Drake Relays. You can, and should, watch the video of her returning to the hotel where she defected. I cried. https://www.instagram.com/tv/B0aj3Exnd7n/

Here is my interview with her from the mixed zone:

How much does it mean to you to be here today?

“Oh my god, it means the world. It means a lot for me, it means a lot for my family.
It is unbelievable for me that in a short time, I would be able to achieve all kind of stuff here.

You know, finish here as a Cuban, come back as an American athlete, and have a PR for me today which is so amazing. I am still processing in my head!

It is going to take a little while, I am going to wake up tomorrow and still feel like, ‘oh my god, what is going on?’ I’m just so happy. It means a lot to me.”

Can you believe you got fifth place?

“No. I can’t believe I am the fifth best woman in the United States right now. It’s so so happy for me to be able to say that out of my mouth! It’s amazing!”

Did you think you could place that high?

“I was ready. I knew that I could get the 15 [feet] for this summer, hopefully this year
I can get the Olympic qualifying mark which is 4.70.

Now I am just so happy! Just one year back and I have achieved all kinds of stuff.”

How many years did you take off after defecting?

    “Five years!”

    You took five years off?

    “Yes”

    Were you training at all?

“Nothing, just focused on working and trying to be regular and trying to support myself and trying to pay the bills.”

How long ago did you start training again?

“It has only been a year. From one summer to another summer. It’s just a year.”

How does it feel to be in the 15 foot club now?

    “Whoaaaa… I feel like I’m an Olympian again, that’s what I feel.

A lot of competitors here, I feel good! I feel good that I am able to be part of this good atmosphere.”
Daylis competed for Cuba in the 2012 Olympics.
