And Eugene does far and away the best job in promotion, fan appreciation and general all around atmosphere. Eugene is special. I get that a lot of people don't like Nicke's big footprint, but they carry this sport in many respects.

Promotion in Des Moines is non-existent. Every Uber driver we have used has asked us why we are doing at the stadium. They have no idea what is going on here.

My cab driver from the airport knew about it, as he had served many passengers who were coming to town for the meet. I shared a cab with the father of one athlete. Makes one wonder what portion of the crowd is family and coaches (as opposed to actual fans without that direct connection)

Is it? I havenít seen any attendance numbers. I know what I see on USATF.tv but appearances can be deceiving.

Those aren't terribly out of line with typical USATF Championships, but a bit below average.

The problem is that almost no one in track and field is particularly invested in fan interest. Here's an anecdote to illustrate.

Two years ago I flew down to Florida to spend a weekend with a buddy. Since we had no particular plans for Saturday, I suggested we drive to Gainesville and see the Florida Relays. He was game. The meet was fun and the competition good.

BUT what disturbed me was that, unlike Penn or Drake or Texas, there was zero fan infrastructure. We could buy cold drinks at the stadium but no food, no fan gear. There was no such thing as a Florida Relays or Gators Track & Field t-shirt. We asked about it and got odd looks. We couldn't spend money if we tried. And this was for a relatively major event.

Pro sports without food, beer, or promotions would quickly disappear. How do we make even these basic things happen at a track meet? And why would universities invest this kind of effort for a facility that sees, at best, 3 or 4 competitions a year?

Goe blaming USATF is the easy way out. The problem goes much, much deeper.
