    I think that those numbers speak more about Szewinska's longevity. No way would JJK have had as long as a career doing the Hep and the other events.

    Ah. Thanks, that brings her point total to 344. Note that the 400 hurdles wasn't a championship event during her career and the pentathlon has never been a championship event outdoors. Could she have won 400H gold if it had been added to the Olympic program 4 years earlier (1980)?

    Oops! I see that this website lumped it in with with heptathlon in the results section. I wrongly assumed that women's first opportunity to do multis happened at the same time to were allowed to do the marathon. I've long known about some of the stuff women weren't allowed to do back in those days (eg. no pole vault, no steeplechase, 80-meter hurdles, etc.) but I didn't know about the pentathlon.     And BTW, in 1965, the only season Szewińska was doing the pentathlon, she ran the 80H in 10.8, a world-class time in its own right.
