Yes this is a good point I thought about earlier. Pan Ams provides a valuable opportunity to score big IAAF rankings points for all of the Team USA athletes that are not getting in to many meets in Europe...

Somehow USATF continues to find ways to impress me with its incompetence.

Well, they might not have been of WC interest but they were certainly of much higher interest than now with many top athletes from eligible countries competing.

Of course, event standards were more variable and have lacked depth, the same as every sub-global championships, ever, but how about this tight 1974 800m final:

    John Kipkurgat (1:43.91) - WR 1:43.7 Fiasconaro 1973
    Mike Boit
    John Walker
    Filbert Bayi (1:45.32)

Note that 4th place in the 2017 WC was 1:45.25 with Nijel Amos half a second behind that and Bosse winning in 1:44.67.

Admittedly, the marathon was full of names you wouldn't recognise:
Ian Thompson (2:09:12) - WR 2:08:33.6 or 2:09:36.4 both Clayton
    Jack Foster
    Derek Clayton
    Ron Hill
    Jerome Drayton

The other major benefit of CWG is that you are more likely to see future political rabble rousers compete like Sitiveni Rabuka, Sebastian Coe and some guy called T. Delamere.

Sorry, i missed that - it's a good story anyway.

However, I'm sure that the story is the same for every sub-global championships and I don't think their relative decline has been good for the sport.

We know the Commonwealth Games will never conflict with the European Championships.

So just schedule the Pan Am Games the same time as the European Championships. Plus it is when there is a pause of the Diamond League Schedule.

The worst was in 2011 when they were in Guadalajara, and the American team they sent was bad even by Pan Am standards because it was at the end of October.
