07-20-2019 07:52 PMThe "auto spot" is actually a wild card. It's up to the athlete's federation to enter or not enter the athlete. Moreover, if a country has two wild cards in an event--one for the defending champion and one for the DL winner--and they are different people, they can use only one of those wild cards.

The question is, what happens if two pole vaulters (or high jumpers) tie for first in the Diamond League finale and don't want to have a jump off.
My assumption is most athletes would want the jump off in that situation. But what if they didn't? Can they be co-champions? Would the IAAF give two wild cards? It is a good question...

07-21-2019 12:52 AMok here is one final hypothetical... when a jump off is in the offing, but one athlete absolutely refuses but the other wants to go on, what then ? Does the one remaining keep jumping, higher or lower depending on his successes or failures until he clears a height, or does the refusing athlete's refusal give him a DQ and an automatic win to the other.. without any attempt(s) needed ?

07-21-2019 02:29 AMThe rule is clear on that point. If only one refuses to jump in a jump-off, the other is declared the winner, whether or not he/she jumps. See IAAF Rule 181.9(e).
