Exactly..a guy with lots of ambition and zero humility....

and the 'tourist climbers' you mentioned who have no idea what they are getting into...

It probably is very popular with that crowd...unfortunately they take the wrong lesson from it...and do not understand what Krakauer, a real climber, what writing about.

That tragedy, in Into Thin Air, was caused by a rather small but intense storm that, IIRC, developed rapidly, a bit unexpectedly, and lasted hours, not even a day. If such a storm happened on Wednesday, there would have been 100 dead, maybe more.

Oops, two more, in addition to Cash and Kulkarni:

As my closest climbing partner once said, "There's nothing noble about dying in the mountains".

Nothing at all....when Dr. Edward Wilson was on the way back from the South Pole with Scott and realized they were doomed he wrote how much he regretted being there...and had wasted his life for nothing....

My god, hadn't heard about that. My first response was, at least he knows what hard work and suffering are about. That might set him apart a bit. But then, I read the website, and he's just another Seven Summits poser. "Symmonds has created MileToMountain.com to help his friends, family, and fans follow him along his journey." He's just like Don Cash and all the others...."Look at me! Look at me! Look at me!"

In fact life of any kind as we know it is only possible in an extremely narrow band of temperatures.

Symmonds could launch a new brand of gum, "Climb Gum". They could sell it in gumball form and have a Climb Gum gumball machine at the South Col and another at the South Summit. Climbers could have bubble-blowing contests on their acclimatization days. They could install a solar-powered, robotic Harvey Korman mannequin at the bottom of the Hillary Step: "Chewing gum on line, eh? I hope you brought enough for everybody."
