Hardly original article.....Everest lost its luster over 20 years ago.....and closing down Everest? What a dumb idea....and it's up to Nepal anyways....who need the tourist dollars.......no one is forcing anyone up there....and it's not like they haven't been told....

Reportedly, it costs thousands of dollars to try to climb Everest. You could not pay me enough money to try.

Good idea....not sure how much it will change things....who is to confirm you climbed said mountain....lots of trekking peaks at 21,000 ft....

It probably will cut out the really cheap guides...

I'm having some problems with geography. First, someone from Israel set a European record in the 10K. Now, Mont Blanc is the highest point in Europe, ignoring Mount Elbrus and a few other peaks in the Caucasus. The article also seems to ignore that Mont Blanc is shared with Italy.

The answer to the first part of your question is rooted in politics. Too many countries in Asia have refused to let their athletes participate in competitions with athletes from Israel. So rather than disqualify athletes from countries that put politics ahead of sport, the powers that be decided that it was easier to pretend that Israel is not in Asia but in Europe.

Don't think for one minute that Israel isn't guilty of the same type of shenanigans that it accuses its neighbors of.
