I doubt the Nepali government will do much at all...all the deaths are great advertising....I suspect next year it will be even more crowded....

Most likely part of the lower death rate, besides being easier, is that more serious climbers do it. The mobs don't want to do a 8000 meter peak...they want to do Everest...

And that is why the government should require everyone to climb another peak in Nepal before Everest. It will weed out the unfit two ways: some will not even try, and others will pull out after the rigors of the qualifier.

From the government’s standpoint it should be a good deal. Fewer would climb Everest but they would have to make two trips to Nepal. And others would still make one make one trip but quit after the qualifier.

I would even consider a bit lower qualifier. Nepal has 54 of the top 100 peaks (Asia has all of them) which go down to 7.2 meters or 23,600. Not the air of 29,000, but at least a taste of high altitude.

Running a half marathon before a marathon makes sense, and climbing a high peak before Everest does too.

The Nepal government should require a qualifier in Nepal to weed out the people who should not be there. I am not sure charging more money would do as much. Economists call it an inelastic demand curve.

Wait, what's wrong with Mandy Moore? Good singer, incredible actress, and enjoys hiking (but isn't stupid to risk her life in an attempt to summit Everest). She's really kind of perfect!

I have an idea....blast away the top 800' of Everest so that K2 becomes the highest mountain in the world. Talk about Darwinian selection....

You're kidding, right? Talk about more "look at me! Look at me, on my 'spiritual journey'". I felt nauseated as well, reading her blog.

Great idea....I can imagine the avalanches caused by that though...also I'm not sure China wouldn't have some objection...
