NEEDHAM — It was a modest house by this town’s standards, a center-entrance colonial, three bedrooms and a two-car garage on a quarter-acre lot. The inside hadn’t welcomed a renovator in many, many years, and the outside didn’t wear its age particularly well.

Its owner: Peter Brand, Harvard University’s legendary fencing coach. Its assessed value: $549,300.

So when the house sold to a wealthy Maryland businessman for close to a million dollars in May 2016, the town’s top assessor was so dumbfounded that he wrote the following in his notes: “Makes no sense.”

    Now it might.

The buyer, it turns out, was the father of a high school junior who was actively looking at applying to Harvard with an eye toward being on the fencing team.

Soon enough, Jie Zhao’s younger son would gain admission and join the team. And Zhao, who never lived a day in the Needham house, would sell it 17 months after he bought it for a $324,500 loss.

A better outcome: some much smarter parents (than the above) bought a law schoolmate of mine an upscale trailer in a trailer park a few miles outside of Charlottesville. I came back and stayed over in it when visiting the year after my graduation. Very nice.

After my friend graduated, they sold the trailer at a nice profit. Certainly saved on paying rent. And I am pretty sure they did not buy it from anyone affiliated with the law school!

The Harvard parent should at least have had the sense to have the kid live in the mansion. That would have given him an excuse for buying it even if bogus in reality.

    Meanwhile....

LOS ANGELES — On television, they both have played doting mothers who could do no wrong.

Now, the Hollywood actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin find themselves as the twin public faces of a sprawling college admissions bribery scheme — the best-known symbols of presumptuous entitlement at the center of widespread ire.

But even as the admissions scandal has placed Ms. Huffman and Ms. Loughlin side by side in the spotlight amid dozens of lesser-known parents, the actresses’ roles in this real-life drama are actually quite different — and diverging by the minute.

    Not going well for LL....

TMZ reported earlier this week that prosecutors will only accept plea deals that include prison time, but People noted that [Lori] Loughlin and Giannulli resisted agreements that came with jail time. But then things got more serious: The U.S. Attorney’s office announced on Tuesday that Loughlin and Giannulli were among 16 parents indicted on additional charges, including conspiring to launder bribes and other payments for the scheme. TMZ reports that the U.S. Attorney’s office went to a federal grand jury with the additional charges after Loughlin and others refused to take a plea deal.

A source told E! News that Loughlin had been in “denial” and thought she could “skate by” without getting jail time. The source added, “She is seeing the light that she will do jail time and is freaking out.”

The test whiz, Mark Riddell, would travel across the country to take ACT and SAT college entrance exams for the children of the rich and famous, federal prosecutors say. He was so good at them that he could calibrate a test score on demand.

Mr. Riddell, 36, was a key player in the college admissions cheating scandal that has swept up celebrities like Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin, as well as business leaders and college athletic coaches. He pleaded guilty in Boston federal court on Friday to charges related to the case.
