Offense is desperate; defense is exhausted.

Another CONCACAF team squeaks through via the back door. It's normally the USA doing that.

This is, once again, a good time for such an argument as South America once again had the highest percentage of teams getting to the second round.

Of South American teams, 4 out of 5 got to the second round (80%).
Of European teams, 10 out of 14 (71%).
Of North American teams, 1 out of 3 (33%).
Of Asian teams, 1 out of 5 (20%).
Of African teams, 0 out of 5 (0%).

The typical pattern is that European and South American teams (+ Mexico) progress to the second round, whereas others are eliminated. Despite this, they are planning to give even more spots to those other continents.

    ^^I agree with you now!

By the way, the group stage games so far have been magnificent with lots of very good matches. In the last round many teams that had been eliminated put up a good performance nonetheless: Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Peru and Poland come to mind.

Wow, the Russians dump Spain out of the Cup on penalties. Bet not many saw that coming.

Apparently, the Spanish have maintained their record of never beating a host nation in a major tournament. From what I have heard, most Russians expected their team to be an embarrassment before the tourmanent.
