Not an Olympian, but perhaps the oldest track and field competitor just passed away here in Santa Barbara. John Whittemore set a World Record of 6.69m for the javelin for the 100 year and over category in 2000 along with many other age group records over the past many years. Just last fall he threw a reported 11'2"... not far, but apparently enough to establish a record for 105 year olds.

He passed away this week, a terrific gentleman and friend to everyone he met over a long, long lifetime.

John Woodruff is the oldest living American track and field Olympic champion (an individual event; the 800m. in Berlin 1936). He turns 90.

I think that the Finnish Olympic steeplechase silver medalist (Berlin 1936) Kaarlo Tuominen is living at 97 years old.

The oldest gold medal olympian? How old was John Flanagan (HT) in 1908? Maybe 40? Irish-born John emigrated to the US in 1897. In 1908 he won his third straight hammer throw gold medal for the USA. He returned to Ireland in 1911 and lived there until his death in 1938.

The oldest Olympic gold medalist in a currently contested event is Ellina Zvereva (Belarus), who was 39 years 316 days old when she won the DT in Sydney. The oldest male is Pat Ryan (USA), 37 years and 227 days when he won the 1920 HT. If you count the walks, Tommy Green (GBR) was 38 & 126 in 1932. And if you include discontinued events, Pat McDonald (USA) was 42 & 26 when he won the 56 pound weight throw in 1920.

Donīt forget an Irish-American "whale" John Flanagan. He was 40 years old in London 1908. Look at http://usatf.org/athletes/hof/flanagan.asp

I think the questioner was asking who is the oldest, living T&F gold medalist. Not who was the oldest when they won.
