And sorry, despite being able to almost see UT's stadium outside my office window, I have no insider scoop as to the why.

Recall that he was suspended a couple of years back. This was on our front page in October of '16:

(no, no idea if the two are related)

Well Texas did recently get a new athletic director (Chris Conte) who was at TCU before. So could be new eyes looking at old issues.

Isn't it interesting the way these things are phrased. The headline over the UT website's announcement on the subject says Santegna "separates from" the program. The lede sentence of the release also makes it appear that this was a voluntary act--Santegna "has separated from The University of Texas".

The AP story makes it clear that Santegna's departure was not voluntary. Their lede sentence begins "The University of Texas fired track coach Mario Sategna on Thursday. . . "

Living 400 miles from Austin, I am not a Texas insider. I never heard what the 2016 suspension was about. I knew Stan Huntsman and Bubba Thornton but somehow, despite being a lead official for thirty years,I never got to know Mario.. He was cordial but every meeting was like a first.

Rumor going around wass that he had a drinking problem and that's why he took the leave of absence. There were probably some stipulations with coming back that were not met.

I'd expect a pretty good hire by CDC and he's already said non-revenue sports will be much better funded which is good news since track was woefully underfunded (from a Texas perspective). He's already been making the rounds to the big fish and told them to put up or shut up. The word is $10M is the new minimum donation for bragging rights under the new AD.
