Brief summary of USA Gymnastics drama (I posted this on Facebook):

    1. USA Gymnastics covers up abuse (physical/emotional/sexual) happening under their umbrella for decades.

    2. The USOC sort of shrugs their shoulders and says that sounds like a hard problem, picking on USATF's volunteers and their governance issues is more fun.

    3. Shit starts to hit the fan with the Larry Nassar scandal. USA Gymnastics continues to handle it badly.

    4. Public pressure intensifies on the USOC to decertify USAG. USOC finally says fiiiiiiine and twists USAG's arm to fire their CEO, who is personally and directly responsible for much of the coverup.

    5. Basically nothing else changes at USAG and they continue to handle everything badly.

    6. Shit REALLY hits the fan with the Larry Nassar scandal and the USOC rolls their eyes again and twists USAG's arm into replacing their BOD.

    7. USAG continues to handle everything badly. Like literally, in every scenario, they pick the worst possible thing to do.

    8. USAG's sponsors see how badly things are being handled, and the growing number of lawsuits against USAG, and most of them leave. USAG's insurers have no intention of covering these lawsuits, and there is no way USAG will be financially solvent in a year or two.

    9. USAG continues to handle everything in the worst way possible. Including hiring someone, Mary Lee Tracy, for a key role who has been accused of abusive behavior and who defended Larry Nassar after 50 victims had come forward.

    10. The gymternet has a meltdown over this. MLT feels bullied because people are critical of her past actions and statements.

    11. MLT reaches out to Aly Raisman who is one of the people very critical of her. Aly has already sued USAG for the abuse she suffered.

    12. USAG fires MLT for reaching out to a victim [who is engaged in a lawsuit, but is someone other people within USAG have reached out to before]

    13. USOC's brand new CEO who has been at work less than 2 weeks is like, 'what the actual fuck is wrong with all of you?'

So my early opinion on the new USOC CEO is that I like her.

How many trustees that were around during Nassar's tenure are still there? They need to go, yesterday! In 2014, a corruption scandal in the Queens Library (NYC) prompted the firing of 8 of its 19 trustees because they refused to suspend the library's director, Thomas Galante (later fired himself), who was under FBI investigation, and also refused an audit by the city's comptroller.

Latest lawsuit alleges that Larry Nassar drugged and raped a field hockey player in 1992, filmed it, got her pregnant (but she later miscarried), she told her coach who tried to report it, and that one of the current trustees intervened and succeeded in having the whole thing buried.

George Perles is a pretty big name in somewhat recent Michigan State football history.

    A true horror show....

Erika Davis told her coach what happened, including that the assault was videotaped, according to the lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in Grand Rapids and includes her name. Her coach, Martha Ludwig, confronted Nassar about what happened and demanded and received a copy of the recording, according to the lawsuit.

George Perles, who had resigned as athletic director in 1992 and is a current Michigan State University trustee, later intervened and the complaint was dropped, according to the lawsuit. Perles forced Ludwig to return the video, resign and sign a non-disclosure agreement, according to the lawsuit.

This may be the most disgusting part. A police force which refuses to investigate a rape:

In October 1992, Davis and two friends went to the MSU Police Department to file a report, according to the lawsuit.

"The police told them that since she was an athlete, she had to report it to the athletic department," her attorneys wrote in the lawsuit. "The detective explicitly told them that he was powerless to investigate anything that takes place to the athletic department and to go to the athletic department.

"Plaintiff Erika explained that the athletic department already dismissed it and the Sergeant responded that George Perles is a 'powerful man,' and she should just drop it."

Yeah the claims are so shocking, that I'm sure a lot of people are questioning them a bit, but she names a lot of other people in the suit, presumably some of them are corroborating her story.

I haven't read the actual lawsuit filing yet, I've heard it's a pretty awful read.
