That's an argument for decreasing the swimming events not increasing the athletics ones.

So why does nobody ever end up winning, let alone holding records, for 3 out of 4 of those different ways? Who ever won the breastroke, backstroke, and butterfly, let alone freestyle? Who ever won a medal in back, breast and fly at same games? Might be one or two in whole Olympic history, but I doubt it.

Having to swim multiple races in the same day, for multiple days, makes that very difficult to do in the same meet.

But it's been done before. In Beijing, 4 of Phelps's gold medals were at 200m. Mark Spitz won 4 golds at 100m in 1972.

Breaststroke is narrow specialization. Virtually nobody combines it at an international level with another stroke (except medley). Many people do two of the other three strokes at a high level, and a few can even do all three.
