well lets look on the bright side, at least it is not the worst idea they have come up with and they are likely to think of even worse ones in the future. Lets celebrate.

I didn't think it was possible, but somehow they managed to come up with an even worse idea than removing the 50K walk.

they really are trying to get to 50-50 with women (although I guess a mixed-sex relay is a wash in that department!)
They are also attempting to drop the overall athletics participation by 105. Any idea how this will be accomplished? Tougher standards? 2 per event per country(an eventual situation anyway)?

The release says there will be a reduction of 105 athletes in Athletics. I'm also wondering what steps are being taken to generate that reduction.

I think the NBC picked quartet would be Michael Phelps, Ashton Eaton, Kerry Walsh and Allyson Felix (Katy Ledecky and some random NBA player would be the alternates)

I'll bet short money that NBC prodded (like a horse) the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee to add this event, in spite of the farce that was the Bahamas version. What will it take for the IAAF to grow a new spine, and step in and say HELLZ NO?

And how the hell do they think adding a co-ed 4x4 will accomplish that?

Yet 3-on-3 basketball for both men and women is given the thumbs up.

The IAAF doesn't really know what's going to happen.

    https://www.iaaf.org/news/press-rele...-tokyo-2020-ol

"However, the introduction of the mixed relay does have implications on the athlete quota and programme of athletics at the Olympic Games. We should not expect the athletes entered to compete in the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays, from which the participants for the mixed relay will be naturally drawn, to compete in a third round of heats and finals for the mixed relay without allocating the appropriate space and time in the programme or enabling teams to bring additional athletes."
