I don't really like the idea of giving out more medals for doing the exact same thing. And from an athletic point of view, it's only going to work if it's not on the same day as the single-sex 4x4s. Otherwise it will water down the quality of all 4x4s.

How's that related to one more sprint relay?

I'll give it a chance, even though the Bahamas version this Spring was a dud. How is this a good thing for the 'diversification' of the Olympics when it will come down to another USA-Jamaica shoot-out?

I would think that guaranteeing the U.S. another medal, and a very good shot at another gold would be the last thing the IOC or IAAF would want to do.

Unless the ultimate—but hard to believe—plan would be to kill the two single-sex versions.

see the IOC release now posted to front page, which has a headline of

TOKYO 2020 EVENT PROGRAMME TO SEE MAJOR BOOST FOR FEMALE PARTICIPATION, YOUTH AND URBAN APPEAL

they really are trying to get to 50-50 with women (although I guess a mixed-sex relay is a wash in that department!)

I would guess the USA could take the fifth and sixth runners in the relay pools who normally only run in the semi finals of the men's and women's relays and put them in the finals of the mixed relay.
