Top runner in the L-M category has to go to Lawrence Eugene "Lon" Meyers (Lon Meyers). Of course the reverse M-L would go to Merv Lincoln
Gender Haag would win G-H category
A-B category as mentioned in tandfman is the unbeatable Abebe Bikilia
If only Babe Zaharias was nicked name "Angel" she would be the ultimate "A to Z" category.
    great mind challenge quiz

Audun Boysen. He was no Bikila, but he was one of the top 4 800 guys of the 1950's. Second to beat Harbig's legendary 1.46.6, 2/10s after Moens. Also a couple a couple of WR's at the 1000m. I still rank him above Rodal as Norway's top 800 runner.

OK, then I have to contribute Finland's top AB, namely Arto Bryggare, medalist in 110m hurdles in WC 1983 and OG 1984. While he was the best European in both of these races, he never managed to win the European Championship.
