3/2/61 Charles Deacon Jones Iowa’s Olympic steeplechaser won twice at the Big Ten championship in the mile 4:13.8 and 2 miles 9:23.3.

3/3/61 Valeriy Brumel leaps 7’ 3 1/2” in the high jump to defeat John Thomas for the 3rd time in 3 weeks. This was at the NY Knights of Columbus meet.

3/3/61 George Kerr took the world indoor record 600 yards away from Mal Whitfield and Tom Courtney with a front running 1:09:03 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

3/4/67 Boys High Schools set an indoor flat floor record in the 2 mile relay of 7:50.4 with a team of Arnold Schell 2:01.2, Peter Payne 1:57.5, John Henry 1:56.5, and Jim Jackson 1:55.2.

3/4/67 Tracy Smith set a world indoor record for 3 miles of 13:16.2 winning over Oscar Moore’s 13:22.2 at the AAU championship in NY.

3/4/67 Bob Beamon wins the long jump in an American Record over Ralph Boston 26’ 11 ½” vs.
26’ 7 ½” at the AAU Championships.

3/4/67 Tommie Smith 46.5 anchor leg to bring San Jose State from a 15 yard deficit in beating the Baltimore Olympic Club and Edwin Roberts in the one mile relay at the AAU Championships.

3/6/64 Tom O’Hara lowers the world indoor record for one mile to 3:56.4 at the Chicago Daily News meet. He had run the 3 fastest indoor miles in history over the past 23 days.

3/6/54 Tom Courtney recorded the fastest 880 yards ever run on a flat floor track beating Harry Bright in 1:52.7 during the New York Pioneer Club Games at the 369th Armory.

3/6/54 Fred Wilt won the one mile in 4:15.6 beating Gordon McKenzie and Horace Ashenfelter at the New York Pioneer Clubs Games at the 369th Armory.

3/7/59 Hayes Jones equaled the meet record of 7.1 in the 60 yard hurdles over Lee Calhoun at the NY Knights of Columbus meet.

3/7/59 Ron Delany set a world indoor record for one mile in 4:01.4 defeating Hungarian Istvan Rozasavolgyi who ran 4:01.8. The meet was Knights of Columbus at Madison Square Garden.

3/8/58 Dallas Long sets a 12 pound shot put high school mark of 66’ 1 ½”

3/9/68 Villanova’s Larry James wins the IC4A 600 yard race over Dave Hemery in 1:10.8 at Madison Square Garden.

3/9/62 Hayes Jones runs a world indoor record of 6.9 for 60 yard high hurdles in Chicago breaking the 7.0 record set by Milt Campbell in 1957 and tied by Jones six times.

3/9/57 New York Pioneer Club wins the mile relay in 3:16.9 with Bowen 49.6, Maiocoo 49.4, Pearman 49.0, and Tucker 48.9 over Villanova 3:17.9 and NYAC 3:18.0 at the NY Knights of Columbus meet.

3/8/59 Ted Corbitt wins the first ultramarathon (30 Miles) in the U.S. ushering in the Road Runners Club of American era. The race was in Bronx, NY.

3/10/62 Villanova’s Frank Budd runs a world indoor record 6.0 for 60 yards IC4A meet at Madison Square Garden.

3/10/56 Harrison Dillard ended Lee Calhoun’s win streak in the high hurdles at the New York Pioneer Club Games.

3/11/67 Dave Patrick upset Jim Ryun in setting a world indoor record of 1:48.9 for 880 yards at the NCAA championship.

3/11/67 Charlie Greene wins the 60 yard dash in 6.0 beating a field that included OJ Simpson at the NCAA championship.

3/11/61 17 year old Canadian Bruce Kidd wins the 2 mile race in 8:59.2 by 30 yards at the Milwaukee Journal.

3/13/54 Bob Richards made the first 15 foot vault of the 1954 indoor season doing 15’ ¼”.

3/16/68 Bob Beamon sets a world indoor record of 27’ 2 ¾” in the long jump at the NCAA championship in Detroit.

3/16/57 The New York Pioneer Club 10th annual meet was held at the 369th Regiment Armory. The Pioneer Clubs 1 mile relay team set a flat floor record of 3:15.7.

3/16/58 Ted Corbitt wins MaCombs Dam Park Marathon which would become the Cherry Tree Marathon which was the signature marathon in NY during the 1960s.

3/17/61 Grace Butcher set an American indoor record for the women’s 880 of 2:21.1 at the Cleveland Knights of Columbus meet.

3/18/66 Sam Perry of Fordham won the 50 yard dash over a 17 year old high school sophomore Bill Gaines in 5.3 at the Cleveland Knights of Columbus.

3/18/62 Peter Snell set a world indoor record for 880 yards of 1:49.9 in Tokyo.

3/19/60 Bruce Kidd Canadians 16 year old set a junior open mile record of 4:19.9 at Hamilton, Ontario.

3/22/57 Reverend Bob Richards recorded his 118th & 119th vaults of 15 feet or higher equaling his Cleveland Knights of Columbus meet record of 15’ 3 ½”.

3/22/64 Hal Higdon wins national championship at 30K (18.62 miles) over Oscar Moore 1:41:47.4 to 1:42:35.4 in Silver Spring Maryland.

3/22/64 The New York Pioneer Club (NYPC) team of Oscar Moore, Abe Fornes, and Ted Corbitt win national 30k (18.62 miles) championship in Silver Spring Maryland.

3/24/56 Arnie Sowell of Pittsburgh runs a 1:48 anchor leg making up a 65 yard deficit from Syracuse in a 2 mile relay in 7:35.7 at the Chicago Daily News meet.

3/24/56 Ted Wheeler of Iowa turns in the 4th fastest mile of the year with a 4:07.5 win over Phil Coleman of the Chicago Track Club.

3/26/67 Tom Osler wins the National AAU 30K (18.6 mile) championship in Rockville, Maryland over Lou Castagnola.

3/29/58 The National RRC’s first championship race – 2 Man 10 Mile Relay was won by Buzz Sawyer & Carl Party of Baltimore Olympic Club in 44:20,2 minutes shy of the world mark of 32:29.7 by Max Truex and Mal Robertson.

3/30/56 Browning Ross wins the Firestone War Veterans 15 mile race in Hamilton, Ont. In 1:23:04.

3/31/56 John J. Kelley wins the time prize for Hyde Shoe 12 Mile Handicap race (Cambridge, MA) in 1:04:11. Kelley used the race as a workout running in his sweat suit. There were 83 starters and 76 finishers.
